Happy Holiday / Holiday Inn

Holiday Inn (1942)-stars-1

Happy Holiday and Holiday Inn (Irving Berlin) — These numbers were written separately, but have often been linked since being combined in a medley in the film Holiday Inn (1942). I’ve given Berlin’s original titles, but the first is also frequently referred to as “Happy Holidays,” while the second is sometimes known as “(Come to) Holiday Inn.” Bing Crosby also recorded the medley for Decca in 1942, with John Scott Trotter and his Orchestra, under the title “Happy Holiday.”

From The Complete Lyrics of Irving Berlin, p.351:

The combined numbers were introduced by Bing Crosby (Jim), Marjorie Reynolds, singing dubbed by Martha Mears (Linda), and ensemble. They can be heard on the original soundtrack release (Sunbeam Soun-trak). The recording by Crosby with the Music Maids is part of the album Song Hits from “Holiday Inn” (Decca).

Bing Crosby with John Scott and his Orchestra, featuring the Music Maids — recorded on 1 June 1942, and issued on Decca 18424, b/w “Be Careful, It’s My Heart”

John Scott Trotter was the musical director on the radio program Kraft Music Hall during Crosby’s ten year stint as host, from 2 January 1936 until 9 May 1946. Trotter arranged and conducted music for Crosby from 1937 to 1954. Vocal group The Music Maids was a regular on Kraft Music Hall from 1939 to 1944. The Maids are not heard in the Holiday Inn soundtrack version.

Is there any way to purchase sheet music that contains both “Happy Holiday” and “Come to Holiday Inn”?

      Hi Sharon,
The songs were written separately but combined in a medley in the film Holiday Inn (1942), where (according to IMDb) the medley is played by Bob Crosby and his orchestra and sung by Bing Crosby, Marjorie Reynolds (dubbed by Martha Mears) and a chorus. Bing Crosby also recorded the “medley” for Decca under the title “Happy Holiday.”

I presume sheet music for most vocal versions of “Happy Holiday” will be based on the Crosby or Holiday Inn versions, thus including the melodies of each of the two songs. — doc

Does anyone know if the bridge sung by Peggy Lee in her recording of “Happy Holiday” – “Seeing old friends, oh, the fun of it all, etc.” – is from the original pre-Holiday Inn version by Berlin?

      Hi russell,

According to the Album Index of The Peggy Lee Bio-Discography And Videography (@peggyleediscography.com), that song was recorded on 9 July 1965, for inclusion on her 1965 Christmas album Happy Holiday, Capitol Records ST 2390 (Stereo), T 2390 (Mono). The album is considered a compilation album and is omitted from some Peggy Lee discographies. Three of the 12 recordings on the album were made on 9 July 1965, the remaining 9 having been recorded in 1959 and 1960.

Peggy Lee sings a few lines in the recording that I haven’t heard elsewhere, and which are not found among the lyric versions for the song in my copy of The Complete Lyrics of Irving Berlin, which I’m looking at right now. So my guess is that those lines were added specifically for that recording. I’ve no idea who wrote them, possibly Peggy Lee herself.

      Regards,
      doc
