Carmichael has the role of Cricket, the piano player in a hotel bar band, a combo with two guitarists (one playing banjo in Hong Kong Blues), a bass player, a drummer/percussionist, and a fiddler. The band provides accompaniment for three songs:

    When Johnson was shot dead, what instrumental song did Cricket play when Bogart told him to stop? It’s a sad familiar thing. Hoagy Carmichael was sitting at the piano in To Have And Have Not.
