4. Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby? (Louis Jordan and Billy Austin) – recorded first by Louis Jordan & his Tympani Five (4 October 1943). Wikipedia says of the initial recording, “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby reached #1 on the US folk/country charts.[1] The Louis Jordan recording also peaked at number two for three weeks on the pop chart and peaked at number three on the R&B charts.[2]”
The Andrews Sisters with Bing Crosby had a #2 pop hit with their 1944 recording. The Nat King Cole Trio and Ida James made a Soundie featuring the song in 1944. Dinah Washington recorded it with Quincy Jones and his Orchestra in 1956.
