Ebb Tide

____________

Ebb Tide (m. Robert Maxwell, w. Carl Sigman)

First the tide rushes in
Plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea
And the sea is very still once more

Robert Maxwell — issued in July 1953 on the single Mercury 70177X45

.

Frank Chacksfield and His Orchestra – 1953 (Instrumental)

.

Vic Damone – 1953 recording (or recordings) “with Orchestra conducted by Richard Hayman”

  • Mercury matrix YW 9861, issued in September 1953 on the 45 rpm single Mercury 70216-X45, b/w “If I Could Make You Mine”
  • Mercury matrix YB9861 (take 2), issued in October 1953 on the 78 rpm single Mercury 70216 c/w ” If I Could Make You Mine”

The fact that the 45 rpm single and 78 rpm single have different matrix numbers suggests that they are two separate recordings, but I’m not sure that’s true.

In 1962 Vic Damone released another version of “Ebb Tide,” recorded with an orchestra conducted by Billy May. Capitol matrix 45-36819 was issued in May 1962 on the 45 rpm single Capitol 4756, b/w “My Heart Will Tell You So.”

.

Roy Hamilton – 1954

.

The Righteous Brothers – 1965

The Del-Satins featuring Johnny Maestro – 1967

Hi – Just discovered your site today!
Now, regarding “Ebb Tide”, the Robert Maxwell creation:
The original recording from 1953 by harpist Robert Maxwell on Mercury Records I have recently posted on both YouTube and Jazz-On-Line (aka A Jazz Anthology). I spent quite a bit of time editing the 45 record to get it sounding good for others to enjoy, so feel free to link to it here. It is one of my all-time favorite recordings.
Maxwell is also famous for “Shangri-La,” first recorded by him with Matty Malneck’s orchestra, and “Solfeggio,” the latter used by Ernie Kovacs in his Nairobi Trio skit.
