Home (When Shadows Fall)

The song was published in 1931. Early sheet music covers credit the songwriting to Peter van Steeden, Geoffrey Clarkson, and Harry Clarkson. There is a copyright entry for the song, under the title Home, dated Aug. 8, 1931, in the 1931 edition of the Catalogue of Copyright Entries, Part 3: Musical Compositions, published by the Library of Congress, Copyright Office, in 1932. The entry credits the music to P. Van Steeden, Jr. and Jeff Clarkson, and the words to “Frank” Clarkson.

Without citing its source, Wikipedia claims “Van Steeden’s contribution was administrative and he was compensated by being given writer credit.”

An early recording, possibly the first, by Van Steeden and his Orchestra was issued under the title Home, according to Second Hand Songs. However, in the same year sheet music bearing the subtitle When Shadows Fall was published (above right).

* The Decca catalog number given by a commenter at Youtube (F-2777) appears to be an error. The label and description of an item for sale at eBay indicate that Decca F-2777  is the 78 rpm single Come Ye Back to Bonnie Scotland/Just One of My Dreams, by the same band (recorded January 1932, London).

**  From the Nat King Cole biography by William Ruhlman for AllMusic:

In February 1949, Cole added percussionist Jack Costanzo to the group, which thereafter was billed as “Nat ‘King’ Cole & the Trio.” As of the spring of 1950, Cole’s recordings were being credited simply to “Nat ‘King’ Cole.”

Doc, you missed a terrific recording of Home by Jimmy Rushing. Its from an album that featured Coleman Hawkins, Buddy Tate, Dickey Wells, Ray Bryant etc.. Leaving “Rush” out of your listing is like leaving DiMaggio out of the all-time lineup. That said, you’ve done another great research job. it’s a great tune, I’ve been playing many versions for years, and I still tip my hat to “Satch” and Rudy Vallee (Oh yes! That’s how the song was written.)

    Thanks, Mike Ivers

      Hi Mike,
Good to hear from you. Well, I didn’t exactly miss Jimmy Rushing, I just didn’t find a recording by him in video searches. Wikipedia gives the year 1971 for a Rushing cover, which would indicate the take found on his album The You and Me That Used to Be (Jazz Album of the Year by DownBeat Magazine). However, this must be a different version than the one you refer to, because a review of that LP at AllMusic credits a different supporting cast than the players you mention: Dave Frishberg, Milt Hinton, Mel Lewis, Ray Nance, Zoot Sims, Budd Johnson, and Al Cohn (not all on any one track).

      Regards, doc

You are right about two versions. Both are great. Sadly, no videos with 5X5, and too few photos. Never the less, Little Jimmy was one of the best with a style that influenced many an artist.
